Fantastic start to the Novice/Casual series

May 11, 2019

What a fantastic way to start the Novice/Casual series, a huge fleet of boats, the sun beating down and the wind picking up during the course of the day as the competitors skill and confidence levels grew.

As I always say the competition is to all members, and on Saturday we had every end of the spectrum, from Alex Jarvis, not yet two on a Vision with Mum and Dad, Andy and Kirsten, to Mike Brown very much older!!

New OOD Paul Fletcher set a nice triangular course and had sage words of advice a about tactics and how to approach the start line, however this early in the season he certainly wasn’t reaching for his recall flag. He certainly got into the swing of the day, and by popular demand sneaked in a single lap fifth race.

The Casuals consisted of many regulars, with addition of a handful of Pirates promoted to the more experienced fleet. The fleet maybe called Casual, but the racing is not, there were some very competitive boats on the water, especially Alex Maitland, who had greatly curtailed his Friday night alcohol intake to ensure he made the morning races. Tess and David Nowell looked as majestic as ever, winning the event, however the addition of a spinnaker/ parachute may well affect their chances next time. A very consistent Felix Cummings came in second, and if he hadn’t had to leave early I’m sure Arlo Braund, would have been pressing him. Bea Greenfield, on a training session with her brother happened upon the start line and won the two races she competed in!!

The Novice fleet was very much smaller, generally because I keep on promoting people. It was fantastic result for Rob Shepherd in his second season of sailing, as he took the victory in the Fusion. Lucian Paul came second through perseverance, especially as he had a couple of difficult races in the light wind in the morning. Evan Palmer also had a good morning with two second places, but unfortunately had to to leave at lunchtime due to the curse of spring, exam revision!!

Hopefully I’ll see a few more of you next month, 1st June, especially if you are just starting out and fancy joining the Novice fleet.
